Above the National Standards for Cancer Care

Commission on Cancer® gives approval with gold-level commendation after recent site visit

The American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer (CoC) recently granted one of its highest accreditations — Three-Year Approval with Commendation — to Capital Health’s Center for Oncology.

Rona Remstein“We received this achievement due to our comprehensive oncology program, physician, nursing and staff leadership and fervent commitment to patient-centered care, all of which are important for an excellent cancer program,” said Rona Remstein, director of Oncology Services.

“The CoC consists of more than 100 experts from across the country who set the standards for all aspects of cancer management and care quality,” said Dr. Bernard Grossman, director of Medical Oncology and chair of the Capital Health Cancer Committee. “Based on a comprehensive onsite visit, our center is operating at among the highest levels recognized by their national accreditation program.”

Shirnett Williamson“With a more than 90 year history, the CoC has had a significant role in establishing national standards to ensure quality, multidisciplinary approaches, and comprehensive cancer care delivery,” said Dr. Shirnett Williamson, medical director of Radiation Oncology and Cyberknife and cancer liaison physician for the CoC. “This is a true testament to the commitment of the team at Capital Health.”

Accreditation by the CoC is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.

In the 2015 performance report, Capital Health earned Gold level commendation (the highest level possible) by achieving commendation status in seven special areas reviewed and compliance status in all 23 other standards.
