Capital Health has launched a new Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) Residency Program as part of its growing roster of Graduate Medical Education offerings. Interviews with candidates began in the fall of 2024 and the first class of residents will start in July of 2025. Residents will complete all of their training rotations at Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell in Pennington, New Jersey for the duration of this four-year program.
“With almost 4,000 deliveries and more than 1,000 major gynecological procedures performed each year at Capital Health, residents will gain significant knowledge and experience serving the diverse needs of women in our region,” said Dr. Mark Kuhn, director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program and a board certified physician at Capital Health OB/GYN - Yardley. “Our first class will be Capital Health’s only OB/GYN residents for a time, so they’ll have a unique opportunity for extensive clinical exposure at the start and play an integral role in the development of the program as it moves forward.”
First-year residents are introduced to obstetrics with studies of the normal physiology of pregnancy and management of the normal labor process. This includes performing uncomplicated deliveries and cesarean sections, ultrasounds in low-risk patients, and treatment of routine complaints during pregnancy. In gynecology, residents expand their knowledge of the normal menstrual cycle, contraception counseling, and management of common conditions. They also perform minor procedures such as LEEP (a preventive treatment for cervical cancer), hysteroscopy, and basic laparoscopy. In addition to their training, Capital Health OB/GYN residents receive a highly competitive salary and benefits package.
The OB/GYN Residency Program at Capital Health is part of a larger Graduate Medical Education Program, which is dedicated to developing the next generation of health care leaders in areas of specialization that also include emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, and a transitional year residency. Each program is structured to provide well-rounded training in a culturally diverse environment. Capital Health’s culture of teaching and learning is built on a foundation of collaboration that integrates rigorous academics and clinical experiences across disciplines throughout the organization. Residents are also actively engaged in quality and safety initiatives at Capital Health and participate in institutional committees, preparing them to become physician leaders in their chosen areas of specialization.
