According to the American College of Physicians, nephrology is defined as the area of medicine concerned with kidney diseases. Nephrologists (physicians who specialize in kidney care) are trained and board certified in internal medicine with additional training in a broad range of kidney disorders and how they affect other areas of the body. This wide scope of knowledge allows nephrologists to diagnose and treat kidney diseases as well as conditions that these disease can produce (hypertension being one) or diseases that can cause kidney failure (including diabetes melitus and polycystic kidney disease).
In addition to leading our hemodialysis unit at Capital Health Regional Medical Center for more than three decades, nephrologists at Capital Health collaborate with other specialists as part of the Heart and Vascular Institute at Capital Health Medical Center - Hopewell.
