Resident outcomes
For the most recent three-year period – 2021, 2022 and 2023 – the Program has a 96 percent board pass rate on the ABIM certifying exam. Information about the board exam pass rates for all internal medicine programs is available at www.abim.org. This site also supplies important information about the interpretation of board exam pass rates.
The program provides several activities to facilitate preparation for the exam including:
- Interactive board review sessions held throughout the academic year, based on material from the American College of Physicians Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program (MKSAP)
- Annual in-training service exam
- Each resident receives most current MKSAP
- Monthly subspecialty quizzes
- Facilitating attendance of all residents in the PG3 year at a nationally conducted board review session of their choosing by providing duty coverage and financial support
- Annual two-hour bedside clinical exam skills exercise (CEX)
- Ongoing Mini-CEX's at patient's bedside
- Regularly scheduled meetings with the faculty advisor to discuss educational goal setting and career planning
- Provision of 1:1 mentoring and group sessions by APD for residents with suboptimal ITE results
Fellowship training
Every year, members of the graduating class have been accepted into subspecialty training in fellowships such as critical care/pulmonary medicine, endocrinology, infectious disease, cardiology, hematology/oncology, geriatrics, and sports medicine.
The Program supports residents who have the goal of subspecialty training by encouraging those with excellent medical knowledge to arrange away electives in their chosen subspecialty in their senior year.
Residents are also integrated into the many hospital committees and patient quality and safety initiatives reflecting their subspecialty interest. Code Blue Analysis, Opioid Stewardship, Diabetes Task Force and Antibiotic Stewardship are just a few of the projects.
Over the past five years, graduating residents continued on to numerous fellowship programs. Our other graduates chose careers in academic medicine, hospitalist positions or primary care.
