Speak with the Dietitian: Meal Planning for Diabetes

Were you recently diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes? Have you had diabetes for a long time and are still unsure about what to eat? Are you confused by carb counting and food labels? This class will focus on how foods affect your blood glucose. We will discuss meal planning strategies such as the plate method, carbohydrate consistency, meal timing, portion sizes, and snacks.
The class is led by Mindy Komosinsky, our registered dietitian/certified diabetes care and education specialist. Bring your questions and learn what you need to know to help manage your diabetes.

Diabetes Self-Management Education Group Classes
Wednesdays, 9:30 - 11 a.m. or Thursdays, 5:30 – 7 p.m.
Location: Capital Health – Hamilton or Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell
Part of our referral-based, comprehensive outpatient Diabetes Self-Management Education and Training Program, this four-week series of 90-minute group classes empowers individuals to take control in the successful management of their diabetes. Learn from a certified diabetes care and education specialist, nurses, dietitians, and other health care providers to gain the knowledge and skills to manage your diabetes with confidence.
Class 1: Diabetes management, pathophysiology, chronic complications, medications (oral and GLP-1).
Class 2: Healthy eating (part 1), lifestyle and healthy coping.
Class 3: Monitoring, acute complications, medication (insulin), distress and support.
Class 4: Being active, healthy eating (part 2).

These referral-based diabetes education classes are for those who have completed our Diabetes Self-Management Education and Training Program. Offered periodically, these classes refresh your diabetes knowledge and explore up and coming diabetes self-management topics.
Current Topic: Healthy Eating Habits and Using Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs)
- Nutrition 101 review and how to create balanced meals
- The difference between monitoring your blood sugar with a glucometer and a continuous glucose monitor (CGM)
- How to make everyday decision-making using diabetes technologies to guide your meal choices and times

Diabetes Support Group
Wednesdays, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.
Location: Online via Zoom
Managing diabetes can be a lot of work, so it’s important to get support from other people who are living with it. Led by our caring, supportive guides, this free support group will connect you with others living with diabetes to share experiences and insights on managing diabetes and overall health. Our support groups discuss all topics related to daily self-management, including daily care adherence, finances, and nutrition. Additional benefits include:
- Giving and getting support
- Offering and receiving practical insights about dealing with diabetes
- Sharing challenges, stresses, and successes
- Minimizing the isolation you may feel living with and caring for your diabetes
