When you arrive at Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell’s Emergency Department entrance, you’ll notice a separate glass-surrounded room with a large floor-to-ceiling mural, a wall-mounted flat screen TV, and small, child-sized furnishings. That’s our Pediatric Emergency Department waiting area, and yes, it’s separate from our Adult Emergency Department waiting area. So are the triage rooms where you’re evaluated upon arrival. When it’s time to see the physician, our clinical areas are also separate from the Adult Emergency Department so that every room you enter is designed just for children and parents.
Our 16-bed Pediatric Emergency Department is separate from our adult emergency department, and only treats patients who are newborns through 20 years of age. Our Pediatric Emergency Department only offers highly qualified, board-certified physicians trained to treat your child’s emergency and pediatric trained nurses — available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Pediatric Observation Program
Our new Pediatric Observation Program at Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell allows us to care for children who are not well enough to go home, but not sick enough to be admitted as an inpatient. We can provide continuous, quality, family-centered care within the observation model for complaints such as respiratory disorders, dehydration, and febrile illnesses to name a few.
A short-term observation stay can be anywhere from 24-48 hours. This model of care allows families in our community to receive the care they need close to home. If at any time a child requires additional care or an extended stay, we partner with our local Children’s hospitals who will assume care and assist us in coordinating a transfer to their facility.
Our goal is to continue to meet the medical needs of children and their families within our community and to provide safe and convenient care by professionals dedicated to the specialized needs of children.
