Dr. Joseph Auteri is a board certified, fellowship trained cardiothoracic surgeon with more than 30 years of clinical experience. His clinical interests focus on minimally invasive and traditional surgical approaches to coronary disease, valvular disease of the heart, and aortic anuerysm and dissection. 

After completing undergraduate studies in biochemistry at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Dr. Auteri received his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, he completed general surgery residency (serving as Chief Resident) and fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery. 

Dr. Auteri brings more than 25 years of leadership experience to Capital Health. Most recently, he was chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Order of St. Francis Healthcare – St. Anthony Hospital’s Cardiovascular Institute in Rockford, Illinois. Prior to that, he was the medical director of the Doylestown Heart Institute, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.  While at Doylestown, the program was recognized as being in the top three in quality metrics in the Delaware Valley (mortality rate, infection, stroke, readmission, renal failure, among others). Under his leadership, Doylestown Hospital’s program was recognized as a Top 50 Cardiac Hospital in the nation by Thomson-Reuters.  He has held similar roles in cardiothoracic surgery programs at hospitals in Virginia as well as in Arizona. 

In addition to his clinical experience, Dr. Auteri has also served in academic settings. Following a post-doctoral research fellowship at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in New York City, he was an associate professor of Clinical Surgery there and a clinical instructor in surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.

Dr. Auteri is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of the Society for Thoracic Surgery and the Western Thoracic Surgical Association. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserves Medical Corps at the rank of Major.

In his personal life, Dr. Auteri has been married for almost 40 years to his wife, Maia, with whom he raised three sons. He is a licensed Instrument Rated private pilot.

     o    Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) – Working with interventional cardiologists to perform this minimally invasive alternative to an open surgical procedure for patients with severe aortic stenosis or those with a failing aortic valve who are at elevated risk for complications during open surgery
     o    MitraClip – Working with interventional cardiologists to perform this minimally invasive alternative to an open surgical procedure for patients with clinically significant mitral regurgitation.
