FAQs/Requirements

Q: How will interviews be conducted?

        A. Interviews will be conducted virtually. There will be no in-person interviews.

Q: What is the Application deadline?

        A. Applications are accepted through ERAS until January 15. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis starting when ERAS opens in September.

Q: What are the dates for the interview period?

        A. Interviews are scheduled from October through February.

Q. How many residents are in each year?

        A. The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Capital Health is a categorical program with 25 residents in each year – 75 total residents. We have one fourth-year Chief Resident/Junior Faculty Member.

Q. Do you offer/allow second looks?

        A. In order to decrease the stress on our applicants, we do not encourage “second looks”. Applicants often find themselves wondering if a “second look” will increase their chances of showing interest and matching with the program. Our match list is developed based on the strength of the application and applicant’s interview. Please see the AAIM Guidelines on Post-Interview Communication and Second Looks.

Q. Do you offer/allow observerships?

        A. No. The State of New Jersey defines an “observer” as a current medical student. Observerships vary in their quality; therefore it is difficult to assess the value of an observership.

Q. How important are USMLE scores?

        A. We review applications of those who passed all exams on their first attempt and scored above 215. All applications that do not meet minimum score requirements are automatically filtered out in ERAS and will not be reviewed by faculty.

Q. What other required documentation do I need?

        A. Medical school transcripts
        B. USMLE transcripts
        C. Personal statement
        D. ECFMG certification, if graduate of an international medical school
        E. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
        F. Three letters of recommendation

Q. Do you offer visa sponsorship?

        A. We accept applications of U.S. citizens and permanent residents only. At the present time, Capital Health does not support J-1 visas.

Q. Do I need an ECFMG certification when I apply?

        A. No, as long as all other program requirements are met. However, you will need a valid ECFMG certification at the time of ranking in order to be considered.
