Nurse-Turned-Patient Lauds ‘Seamless’ Care Journey

Shannon DavilaAs a medical professional, Shannon Davila knows her way around a hospital. She is fluent in medical terminology, understands how hospitals work, and is particularly well-versed in patient safety. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019, Shannon didn’t hesitate; she sought care at Capital Health Cancer Center.

“My care team was women and working moms, just like I am and about the same age as me,” said the mother of four. “They understood holistic care, the stress I go home to, they understood it all. Each step of the way, all of the care teams, such as the operating room team, were very communicative. Even as a nurse, I had a lot to learn. They took time with me and my family to engage with us on what we were going through.”

Shannon found the coordination of her care among the Capital Health providers to be outstanding. “I did not have to worry about appointments or testing,” she said. “Everything was in sync. I was never confused about who I needed to see next. My care journey was seamless.” Fortunately, Shannon’s outcome was excellent. “I did great. I did not develop any infections and had a great recovery.”

"Capital Health is an institution rooted in our community," Shannon said. “I love that president and CEO Al Maghazehe is a true leader. Capital Health has been in the community forever, which especially today with mergers and acquisitions in healthcare, is not something you see everywhere.”

By giving to Capital Health, donors are investing in the health of the entire community, Shannon said. “If you get your care there, support the improvements in your care. But it is more than that,” she said. “Capital Health is doing first-rate research and development, acquiring better technology, and providing amazing care five minutes from your house. It is about quality of life. That is a luxury not a lot of people have. I feel very lucky that I have such high-quality care in my backyard.”
